Ethiopia’s Frewyni Hailu Wins Silver in Women’s Mile
Representing Ethiopia in the women’s one-mile event at the World Athletics Road Running Championships, which kicked off today (September 19) in Copenhagen, Denmark, Frewyni Hailu finished in second place. In a race won by France’s Agathe Guillemot (4:22.74 WL), the Ethiopian Frewyni Hailu secured the silver medal with a season-best time of 4:24.35. Kenya’s Miriam Cherop (4:25.71 SB) took the bronze medal. Another Ethiopian participant in the race, Birke Haylom, finished twenty-ninth with a time of 4:42.28, setting a new personal best.
Among the 48 athletes competing in the women’s one-mile race, including gold and silver medalists Agathe Guillemot and Freweyni Hailu, as well as American Addison Wiley and Australian Sarah Billings, the competitors arrived in Copenhagen after participating in the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels and the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest over the past two weekends.
Although Ethiopian athlete Freweyni Hailu failed to upgrade the silver medal she won at the 2023 World Road Running Championships in Riga to gold in Copenhagen, she managed to secure another silver medal for her country. Following her silver medal win in Riga, Freweyni, who has twice been a world indoor champion in the 1500m and 3000m events, also won a silver medal in the 800m at the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
In a brief interview with BizuAthletics after finishing second in the Copenhagen race, Fireweyni said, “Although I entered the competition with the aim of upgrading my previous silver medal to gold, I did not succeed; however, I am happy with the silver medal I won.”
Freweyni has had an incredibly busy few week. After consistently finishing in the top three at Diamond League meets, she won the 5000m race at the series finale in Brussels. She then travelled to Budapest to compete in the 1500m and 5000m events at the World Athletics Ultimate Championships, finishing fourth in both races.
Birke Haylom, who competed in Copenhagen, marking her 18th race of the year, had previously achieved strong results in the 13 races she ran between late January and late June. However, her performances in the five races since the beginning of July, including the Copenhagen event, have fallen short of the standards expected of an athlete of her caliber. We hope that by consulting and working with her coaches to identify the reasons behind this recent dip in performance, she will rectify the issues and return in better form next year.
