Likina Amebaw wins women’s 5K Gold in Copenhagen
Copenhagen, Denmark — September 19, 2026
Likina Amebaw won the gold medal for Ethiopia in the women’s 5-kilometer race at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Likina Amebaw secured another international gold medal for Ethiopia in the women’s 5K race at the World Athletics Road Running Championships, held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on the afternoon of September 19, 2026.
Having demonstrated excellent form in the 5000-meter track events at the Brussels Diamond League and the Budapest Ultimate Championships over the preceding two weeks, Likina once again dominated the competition, controlling the race and claiming victory in Copenhagen’s 5K road race.
The Women’s 5K Race
Around the halfway point, three athletes broke away from the rest of the field, with Likina leading the group. The two runners following her were Kenya’s Caroline Gitonga and Ethiopia’s Aleshign Baweke.
As the pace continued to increase, Aleshign was unable to keep up and gradually fell behind. Caroline Gitonga, however, remained a strong challenger to Likina for some distance.
By the third kilometer, Caroline Gitonga had moved into the lead. After the fourth kilometer, Likina, who had been closely following the Kenyan, attempted to accelerate and brake away. When Gitonga was unable to respond to the surge, Likina pulled away comfortably and headed toward the finish line alone.
Likina crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 14:41, taking the gold medal.
Caroline Gitonga of Kenya finished second in 14:48 to win silver, while Australia’s Rose Davies took bronze in 14:50.
The other Ethiopian competitor, Aleshign Baweke, finished fifth with a time of 14:53.
Likina Amebaw’s post-race interview
Immediately after the race, gold medalist Likina Amebaw gave a brief interview to BizuAthletics in the mixed zone.
She said: “The race was very good. I started leading from the beginning, and I was confident that I would win. There was a little wind, but I managed to cope with it, and in the end, I won.”
When asked whether Caroline Gitonga’s strong challenge during the race had made her nervous, Likina replied:
“I know the athlete, so I was confident that I would beat her in the end. That’s why I continued with complete confidence.”
Men’s 5K Race
In the men’s competition, Eritrean athlete Dawit Seare, who had won the African 5000-meter championship earlier this year, emerged victorious in a highly competitive final stretch.
Dawit overtook Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the closing stages of the race and won in 12:56, setting a new national record for Eritrea. Jakob Ingebrigtsen finished second in 12:59, also setting a new Norwegian national record. Dawit’s teammate, Saymon Amanuel, finished third in 13:00, recording a personal best and claiming the bronze medal.
Ethiopia wins the mixed team gold medal
Although Ethiopia did not win an individual medal in the men’s 5K race, the strong performances of Likina Amebaw and Aleshign Baweke in the women’s event, combined with the men’s results, earned Ethiopia the mixed team gold medal.
In the men’s race, Ethiopia’s Addisu Yihune finished sixth in 13:07, while Mezgebu Sime finished seventh in 13:08. Their results, together with the women’s performances, secured the mixed team gold for Ethiopia.
In this team competition, the finishing times of the participating men and women were added together to determine the winning nation.
