Ethiopia Names Strong Marathon Squad for 2025 World Championships in Tokyo
The Ethiopian Athletics Federation has announced the selection of athletes who will represent Ethiopia in the marathon events for both genders at the 20th World Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13–21, 2025.
According to the marathon team selection statement released today on the federation’s official Facebook page:
Men’s Marathon:
- Tamirat Tola, the Olympic gold medalist from Paris
- Deresa Geleta, who represented Ethiopia at the Paris Olympics
- Tadese Takele, winner of the 2025 Tokyo Marathon
- Milkesa Mengesha, winner of the 2024 Berlin Marathon (as a reserve)
Women’s Marathon:
- Amane Beriso Shankule, the world champion gold medalist from Budapest two years ago, will compete directly to defend her title
- Tigst Assefa, the Paris Olympic silver medalist and winner of the 2025 London Marathon
- Sutume Asefa Kebede, winner of the 2024 and 2025 Tokyo Marathons
- Yalemzerf Yehualaw, winner of the 2024 Amsterdam Marathon
- Tigist Ketema, winner of the 2024 Dubai and Berlin Marathons (as a reserve)
The federation also stated that athletes who have complaints regarding the selection can submit their grievances in writing to the Ethiopian Athletics Federation office within the next five consecutive working days.
